If you’re new to bidets, you probably have questions. Everyone does. Here are the ones that come up most often. If you’re considering a bidet but still have a few things you want cleared up, chances are your question is on this list.
Will a bidet fit my toilet?
Almost certainly. Bidet seats and attachments are designed to fit standard two-piece toilets, which is what the vast majority of Canadian homes have. You’ll want to check whether your bowl is round or elongated and make sure there’s enough clearance between the bolt holes and the tank. If you’re not sure, a quick measurement or a photo sent to our team is all it takes.
Is the water cold?
On non-electric models, the water comes directly from your supply line, so it’s cool or room temperature. Most people find it comfortable, even in winter. Electric bidet seats heat the water to a temperature you set, so it’s warm from the first use.
Do I need a plumber?
For the bidet itself, no. Most seats and attachments install in 15 to 30 minutes with basic tools. The only scenario where you might need a professional is if your shutoff valve is old and won’t close properly, or if you need a GFCI outlet added for an electric seat. Do bidets splash?
No. The spray is a focused, targeted stream aimed at a specific area. It stays within the bowl. You can adjust the pressure to your comfort level, and some electric seats have a seat sensor that prevents the bidet from activating unless someone is sitting on it.
Can kids use a bidet?
Yes. Once a child is old enough to use the toilet independently, they can use a bidet. Start with the lowest pressure setting and show them which button or dial to use. Most kids figure it out quickly and prefer it to wiping.
How much water does a bidet use?
Roughly one-eighth of a gallon per use. That’s a tiny amount compared to the 37 gallons of water it takes to manufacture a single roll of toilet paper. The environmental comparison is striking.
Do bidets use a lot of electricity?
Electric bidet seats use very little power. Most draw about the same energy as a night light when on standby. The heater and dryer only draw power when active, and many models have an energy-saving mode.
Are bidets sanitary?
Yes. The water is clean, fresh water from your home’s supply line. On most electric models, the nozzle runs a self-cleaning cycle before and after each use. It never comes into contact with your body or with waste. We wrote a full post on this if you want the details.
What if I’m renting?
Bidet seats and attachments install without permanent modification to your toilet or plumbing. Everything connects with standard fittings and can be removed and taken with you when you move. Your bathroom goes back to its original state in about 15 minutes, so there's nothing stopping renters from making the switch.
How long do bidet seats last?
A quality bidet seat typically lasts 5 to 10 years or more with normal use. Non-electric models tend to last longer since they have fewer components. Electric seats may eventually need minor maintenance, but the core unit is built to last.
